October 18th should prove to be a very special day for former left fielder, Willie Horton. The state of Michigan has declared that October 18th, 2004, will be officially known as Willie Horton Day. His career as a professional baseball player was long and illustrious. He was a member of the 1968 World Series Championship team. He played 15 of his 18 years for the Detroit Tiger, his home town heroes. He was a vital, solid member of his ball club for his entire career. All of these elements are great accomplishments, but many players in Mr. Horton's sport can boast similar experiences. What was it then that prompted his home state to honor him in such a grand way? After sitting down with Mr. Horton in his Detroit area home recently, it all became very clear.
